About Us

Philippine Scholars is a charity in Minnesota that keeps students from poor families in accredited schools in the Philippines. It started in 1994 out of human rights work in Cebu by Gary King, as he and wife, Glen, personally were sending money to help support some families who lost their breadwinners, so that the children could stay in school. Although public schools are free, transportation, lunch, books, supplies, fees, shoes and more items are not, and if a poorer family suffers one economic setback, often the children drop out from school. Over the next 8 years, the program grew to sites in Bohol and Davao City, with over 50 children. To do this, it was adopted as a project in three charitable Minnesota groups, and donations became tax-deductible.  In 2001 we incorporated as a stand alone charity, as a Minnesota nonprofit corporation.  We have 501c(3) status.
